Jim Gotaas was born and grew up in Chicago (Illinois). After stops in Gaithersburg (Maryland) and Preston (England), he finally settled in Carlisle (England).
He started writing at an early age, but ultimately chose physics as his career. He got a PhD in Physics and spent many years doing research and lecturing. Eventually, he moved over to helping other lecturers with their teaching skills, especially online. After retiring Jim returned to writing speculative fiction.

Jim has published short fiction in If (way back in July-August 1971) and more recently has appeared in Daily Science Fiction, the anthology Mind Candy Too, and Pulphouse Fiction Magazine.

He has also published three nonfiction posts in Dan Koboldt’s blog, Science in Sci-Fi, Fact in Fantasy, of which the first two were published in the collection Putting the Science in Fiction (Writer’s Digest, 2018).
